About This Guide

Unlike our hands-on water filter reviews, we haven’t directly tested the salt-free water softeners in this guide (yet). Instead, we researched a wide range of options and selected 7 systems based on specifications, popularity, third-party user feedback, and our prior experience with the brands. For each system, we evaluated:

  1. Key product features: The effectiveness of the applied water-conditioning process, ease of installation (per the manual), everyday use, cost, and more.
  2. Real-world experiences: User ratings across multiple platforms, with fake reviews identified and excluded.

Before We Dive in

This guide covers DIY salt-free water softeners only – systems you can buy directly and install yourself, with no in-home consultations or professional installation required. Also, a salt-free water softener (aka a water conditioner) does not remove hardness minerals. Instead, it helps prevent scale buildup to protect plumbing and appliances. It will not address other hard-water issues such as soap scum, staining/spotting, or dry skin and hair.

Why Trust Us?

You might be wondering, “Why should I trust these recommendations?” Fair question! Here’s the scoop:

Although we haven’t personally tested the water conditioners in this guide (yet), our recommendations are based on careful, detailed research and analysis. We’ve extensively evaluated key product specifications, user feedback across multiple trusted platforms, and our own experience with these brands from previous product reviews.

Also, we’re 100% open about the fact that we participate in various affiliate programs run by the water treatment companies themselves or large marketplaces like amazon.com. This helps us purchase the products/services we test, fund our expensive lab testing, and pay for video production cost while keeping our content free. That said, our ratings aren’t tied to who pays the highest commission. We follow strict, standardized protocols, never accept payments for positive write-ups, and all opinions are 100% ours.

  1. Hello, thank you for your amazing work! I am really curious about Multipure water filters. We have used them for years, but now I’m researching RO systems – which is how I found this site and the great Youtube videos. We are moving to a new property that has some arsenic in the well water, so this is why we will be getting an RO system. I’m really still interested to know if you all have an opinion of Multipure – it doesn’t look like you have done any reviews for their filters. Multipure actually claims to remove arsenic, but no one seems to reference Multipure (for arsenic or even in general) except the company itself and people who are working on behalf of the company. Would really appreciate your thoughts, if you have the time or interest in this one. Thank you again for the great effort.

    1. Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for your comment and kind words!

You’re right, we haven’t reviewed any Multipure filters yet. But I checked, and their Aqualuxe, Aquaperform, and Aquapremier models do carry NSF certification for arsenic 5 reduction (https://info.nsf.org/Certified/dwtu/listings.asp?CompanyName=multipure&submit1=Search+by+Manufacturer&Program=DWTU). The performance data sheet for the Aquaperform, for example, shows a reduction rate of 97.6–98.0%, which is excellent. Just keep in mind this applies specifically to arsenic 5 (pentavalent), not arsenic 3 (trivalent, much harder to remove). Also, the NSF test level is 50 ppb, so if your water has arsenic 3, or much higher levels of arsenic 5 than that, the Aquaperform alone may not be enough.

As for Multipure filters in general, I really like that they are thoroughly NSF-certified. What gives me pause is the pricing – around $700–900 or more for a countertop unit without a pump that just connects to a faucet? That’s a lot, and I’m not convinced the price is justified.
