We are committed to researching, testing, and comparing products following a meticulous review process. In a nutshell:
Real-World, Hands-On Testing
One of the two core pillars underpinning our review process is extensive hands-on testing. We install and evaluate every product directly on our home taps and water supplies. Nothing beats firsthand experience for revealing installation hurdles, flow-rate issues, design quirks, or low build quality.
Independent Lab Analysis
The second core principle is lab testing: Whenever possible, we send “before” and “after” water samples to a certified, independent lab for analysis of the various impurity levels. We usually test each sample for more than 100 analytes including volatile organics, heavy metals, salts and minerals, and parameters including pH, alkalinity, TDS, hardness, and turbidity.
Comprehensive Testing
We rigorously test every product by evaluating all features specific to its type or design — for example, among many other things, we test water filters for filtration speed, taste and odor of the filtered water, and pure-to-drain ratio (for RO systems), and water softeners for ease of installation, salt loading, and programming the control head.
Full-Spectrum Evaluation
Leaving no stone unturned, we evaluate each product from every possible angle. By synthesizing the results from our own comprehensive testing with all other aspects uncovered during our research – such as NSF/ANSI certifications, third-party test data, upfront and long-term costs, product warranties, unique features, and customer reviews – we calculate a final score for each system or service we evaluate. This ensures our top picks consistently exemplify the most effective, well-rounded real-world performance in their respective categories.

Sara has been a lifelong home-improvement fan (she’s been hooked on This Old House since she was five) and taught herself any project she didn’t already know by watching YouTube tutorials. She is also an award-winning filmmaker. Armed with this skillset, Sara installs, primes, samples, uses, and maintains nearly every point-of-use water treatment system we test – then brings her results to life on camera for our YouTube channel.
Adam has always loved testing and reviewing the latest products. He began his BOS Water journey doing simple pitchers and has since expanded his expertise to installing and evaluating advanced point-of-entry systems. Cultivating a small business in the filmmaking industry, Adam is also in front of the camera sharing his findings on the BOS Water YouTube channel.
Lyrae is an environmental scientist with a solid background in water chemistry, testing, and quality. She’s passionate about water contamination and the value of accurate information that empowers families to make better decisions. Combining scientific rigor with skilled writing, Lyrae bridges the gap between environmental data and real-world impact, making information clear so consumers can take control of their drinking water and health.
Mykyta has a background in marketing technology and creative production. He edits our videos, helps develop scripts, and works on the backend of the website to keep everything running smoothly. He also supports our publishing and content production processes behind the scenes.
Raoul has a background in mechanical engineering and has been writing about home water treatment since 2015. He designs our product review processes, analyzes the results, and ties everything together. As editor-in-chief, he tries hard to keep the whole operation running smoothly behind the scenes.
