Our Verdict (Best For)
The PUR PLUS 30-Cup produced poor lab results, possibly leaching barium and boron above strictest health guidelines; it improved our water’s taste but left an off flavor. It has 26 NSF/ANSI-certified contaminants (mostly organics). Usability is solid: setup and filter changes are easy (+ there’s an indicator light to remind you). Filtration is pretty fast at the start (not quite on-demand), yet slower towards the end processing the 14-cup feed tank in ~1:03 hr (suitable for most users). Dispensing is splash-free, yielding 1 cup in an extremely fast ~2.25 sec but requires a counter/shelf edge or stand to pour. Refilling is easy, and unfiltered water is visible through the clear feed tank. More pros/cons: slim, sturdy, BPA-free, fits fridge shelves, fewer daily refills, low ongoing costs, short 90-day warranty. Overall, the PUR PLUS 30-Cup is not one of our top countertop water filters.
The PUR PLUS 30-Cup is a countertop water filter dispenser that doesn’t require a plumbing connection. It’s designed for use as a drinking water filter and can purify both tap water and properly disinfected well water (pre-treatment may be required).
As usual, we’ve tested the system with our own hands:

Full Analysis of the PUR PLUS 30-Cup
Filtration: /5.00
The PUR PLUS 30-Cup scored 2.20/5.00 for filtration. How? Most importantly, it achieved poor results in our 2024 lab testing, and while it produced odorless water that tasted better than our tap water overall, it imparted a “filter aftertaste.” Plus, the system has a higher count of NSF/ANSI-certified contaminants, but this is mostly limited to the easier-to-remove organics.
1. Lab Results: /5.00
Remember that our before vs after lab comparison is not an exact science. It’s informational and subject to variability, inaccuracies, and interferences caused by natural fluctuations in water quality, accidental contamination, human error, instrumentation issues, and more. Furthermore, our lab testing is limited to those contaminants present in our water supplies and at their respective concentrations, which is why the results may contradict third-party test data. As such, our lab testing can only give us a general idea for how effective a certain water treatment product might be.
In our lab test comparing an unfiltered and a filtered tap water sample, the PUR PLUS 30-Cup could remove 8 undesirable impurities and contaminants to below the minimum detection level (so essentially to 100%): chlorine, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, chloroform, copper, lithium, nitrate, and uranium.
The following substances remained in our water (note: in our view, most concentration increases are generally due to leaching, although natural fluctuations cannot be ruled out):
- Barium increased by 2,075%. At 0.87 ppm, it was 1.24x higher than the strictest barium health guideline we could find (0.7 ppm, EWG). Associated effects above that guideline are harm to the kidneys and cardiovascular system.
- Boron increased by 1,720%. At 0.91 ppm, it was 1.82x higher than the strictest boron health guideline we could find (0.5 ppm, WHO). Associated effects above that guideline include developmental and reproductive toxicity.
- Zinc increased by 800%. That said, zinc is merely an aesthetic impurity which only becomes relevant (e.g., impacting water taste) at a higher level than detected in our sample, which at 0.09 ppm was 55.56x lower than the strictest zinc guideline we could find (5.0 ppm, EPA secondary standards). PUR’s performance data sheet for its NSF/ANSI standard 42 certification reports 92.70% zinc reduction. Aside from different feed water concentrations, one possible explanation for this discrepancy is the use of KDF media (a copper-zinc mix), which might have released trace zinc.
- Strontium decreased by 89%.
- Fluoride was reduced by 75%.
Side note: We also tested two additional PUR PLUS filter elements in the PUR PLUS 11-Cup pitcher – one in 2024 and the other in 2025 – which we discuss in more detail in our best water filter pitchers guide. Interestingly, once again barium and boron increased in the filtered water above health guidelines in the 2025 test round; in the 2024 pitcher test, only barium increased, and it remained below its health guideline.

The PUR PLUS is certified for the reduction of 26 contaminants by the NSF against NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 401 and by the WQA against NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 401.
Listed reduction rates include:
- Chlorine (taste and odor – 97.50%)
- Nominal particulates, class I (0.5 to <1 μm – 99.80%)
- Zinc (92.70%)
- Lead (99.40-99.70%)
- Copper (95.90-99.30%)
- Mercury (>96.40%)
- Emerging compounds including industrial chemicals, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals (94.30-99.00%+)

3. Filtration Process
The PUR PLUS filter cartridge utilizes particle filtration, granular activated carbon, and ion exchange resin.
- Particle filtration (mechanical filtration) acts like a sieve to trap solid (undissolved) impurities like sand, rust, and dirt.
- Activated carbon removes things like bad tastes and odors, chlorine/chloramine, disinfection byproducts and other organics, as well as certain metals.
- Ion exchange resin targets dissolved, unwanted ions in the water – including metals and salts.

4. Taste and Odor Test
In our test, the filtered water was odorless, and the taste was improved overall compared to our tap water but had a “filter aftertaste.”

1. Initial Setup & Filter Priming: /1.00
Assembling the PUR PLUS 30-Cup is easy. The one-sheet quick start guide provides clear, illustrated directions for each step, and there’s also a helpful tutorial video on YouTube.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the setup procedure:
- Hand wash dispenser, lid and pour tray (upper reservoir) with mild soap and rinse. If using dishwasher, first remove spigot with provided tool.
- Soak filter for 15 minutes, then rinse for 10 seconds.
- Insert filter into upper reservoir and twist clockwise to tighten. Press and hold filter indicator reset button for 10 seconds until it blinks green.
- Fill reservoir with cool tap water and allow it to filter completely.
- Now your system is ready to use.




2. Day-to-Day Use: /3.10
2.1 Speed & Water Capacity: /1.20
The PUR PLUS 30-Cup is suited for daily use but on-demand filtering, which we define as 1 cup in <1 minute, takes just a little more patience. The system filtered and dispensed 1 cup in ~2:35 min and 4 cups in ~13:14 min in our filtration speed tests.
However, as the spigot sits above the bottom of the clean tank, the system must first process and collect ~7 oz of water before any can be dispensed, which took ~2:44 min. As a result, starting from an empty system, the total time to filter and dispense 1 cup was ~5:19 min, while dispensing 4 cups took ~15:58 min.
Requiring 1:03 hours to fully filter and dispense the entire feed tank, the PUR PLUS 30-Cup produces large volumes relatively slowly for a dispenser-style system. Still, it’s definitely fast enough to handle 8-10 cup/hour thirst bursts for average US households, which we assume consist of 2.55-3.15 people.
Dispensing filtered water from a full clean tank is also extremely fast – we measured about 2.25 seconds for 1 cup.
The 14-cup feed tank and 18-cup clean tank allow you to easily fill a 40-oz bottle or 2-quart pitcher from a single refill. Assuming 25.5–31.5 cups of daily water consumption for the average US households, we estimate 2-3 daily refills when filling the system nearly to the top – below average for the countertop water filter dispensers we tested.

2.2 Dispensing: /1.00
Using a full clean tank, dispensing water is extremely fast and without splashing. The sturdy plastic spigot is easy to use, and there is no dripping after the pour.
Due to the low spout height, the system must sit on a stand or at the edge of a counter or fridge shelf to allow enough clearance for pouring into glasses, 40-oz bottles, or pitchers.
Plus, since the spigot sits just above the base of the clean tank, the last ~7 oz of water cannot be poured unless you tilt or angle the tank forward. However, this is a common limitation and applies to all dispenser-type countertop filters we tested.

2.3 Refilling & Size: /0.90
Refilling the PUR PLUS 30-Cup is easy: after removing the lid, use a pitcher or other container to fill the upper reservoir with water or place the unit in the sink and fill directly from the faucet. There is no max fill line, however, and the user manual does not specify a fill amount.
The clear upper reservoir allows you to see how much water remains to be filtered.
Measuring 5.5″x10.2″x15.4″ (WxHxD), the PUR PLUS 30-Cup fits under most kitchen cabinets (18″ clearance). We could even place it on our fridge shelves without any rearrangement, though it’s too big for the door.
At 3.3 lbs with a wet filter installed and occupying ~84.70 in2 (~0.59 ft2), both its weight and footprint are about average for the dispenser-style countertop systems we tested. Plus, at less than 6″ wide, it is streamlined enough to fit in narrow spots.


3. Filter Replacements: /0.90
Filter replacements are very simple. The filter is easily accessible after removing the lid – you simply push in and twist to install. The filter change indicator tracks the time since the last filter change and lets you know when you need to replace the cartridge.
Rated filter life is 40 gal or 2 months.
Assuming 500 gallons of yearly water consumption for the average household, we estimate that you will have to change the filter 12-13x annually.

Based on value for money, the PUR PLUS 30-Cup achieved a cost score of 4.64 out of 5.00, indicating it is priced below average for what it offers compared to competing systems (a score of 4.00 represents average value). Notably, its upfront price is around average, but its annual filter replacement costs are well below average compared to the other countertop water filters we tested.

As of Jul 13, 2026, the PUR PLUS 30-Cup is priced at $44.14, which is around the $48.53 average we estimate for this type of water filter.

Based on 500 gallons consumption and a 40-gal or 2-month life for the filter cartridge, we estimate $77 in annual filter replacement costs, which is well below the $120.11 average across all the tested countertop water filters.

The PUR PLUS 30-Cup warranty is rather short, covering the dispenser (90 days) and filters (30 days).

Bottom Line: User-Friendly and Highly Affordable – But Potential Leaching Is a Concern (/5.00)
Filtration weighted at 60%, and usability and cost at 20% each, the PUR PLUS 30-Cup scored a final rating of 3.11 out of 5.00.
Filtration performance was quite poor overall. On the one hand, the system completely removed 8 out of 13 contaminants in our lab test and produced odorless filtered water that tasted better than our tap water (but still had a “filter aftertaste”).
Concerningly, however, it showed evidence of potential barium and boron leaching – both above their strictest health guidelines. This is consistent with the findings of our 2025 testing of another PUR PLUS cartridge in the PUR PLUS 11-Cup Pitcher; we also saw increased barium in our 2024 pitcher test using yet another PUR PLUS cartridge, though it remained below its guideline.
Plus, while the system has a higher number of NSF/ANSI-certified contaminants (26), coverage focuses on the easier-to-remove organics and overlooks some important impurities.
On the flip side, usability is solid: it’s very easy to set up, and it processes water quickly enough for most households, though it’s not quite on-demand capable.
Refilling is straightforward, and the clear plastic upper reservoir makes it easy to see the remaining unfiltered water. Plus, the roomy 14-cup feed tank requires fewer daily refills than the average countertop water filter dispenser.
Dispensing is extremely fast as well as drip- and splash-free at 2.25 seconds per cup with a full clean tank. However, you either need to place the unit at the edge of your counter/fridge shelf or on a stand to pour, as the spout is located at the bottom of the dispenser.
Filter replacements are also very easy, with the timer-based filter change indicator letting you know when you need to swap out the cartridge.
The BPA-free plastic construction feels sturdy, and the unit’s slim profile allows it to fit into tight spaces – even on fridge shelves.
While its upfront price is about average, ongoing filter replacement costs are well below average. But the system warranty is a short 90 days.
Despite its affordability and user-friendly features, we don’t recommend the PUR PLUS 30-Cup due to its troubling lab results – especially the potential leaching.
